OBJECTIVE:

Fire is a very common disturbance phenomenon in Mediterranean type eco-systems. Low elevation coniferous forests in the Mediterranean region are heavily impacted by repeated fires. Although often implied, the role of fire as a source of genetic variation among Mediterranean species has never been thoroughly investigated. At the same time, there is a keen need to protect the invaluable genetic resources for maintenance and restoration of coniferous forests damaged by wildfires and to develop criteria for afforestation of burned areas.
