Motivation : Broadleaves silviculture is based upon production of quality wood. This production highly depends on competition in young age and adequate silviculture in mature stands. Moreover, broadleaves forests are a major component of European woodland ecosystems, the survival of which is a great matter of concern. So, production of quality wood must preserve biodiversity of these ecosystems. Finally, silviculture will be operated if the products are adapted to the market.
Proposition : The objective will be reached through a complete integration of ecological silvicultural, industrial and economical studies, which usually are treated separately.
The project is divided into six integrated tasks :
Two themes will allow this integration : wood anatomical and physical properties, and logs dimensions, which are closely related to site, genetics, silviculture and govern industrial transformation.
The main studied species will be indigenous oaks, although thematic studies will complete the frame, namely beech, wild cherry, maples and ash.
Key words are : site and biodiversity, modern silviculture, new markets oriented industrial transformations.
