OBJECTIVE:

This prenormative research project will assess, evaluate and improve the deinkability of newsprint and laser printed papers printed with vegetable oil based inks.

This will be enhanced through

• the assessment of the deinking characteristics of newsprint and laser printing samples printed with commercially available vegetable oil based inks and deinked with conventional chemicals.

• the assessment of the relative effects of vegetable oil based ink components on deinkability;

• formulation of deinking chemicals suitable for use with vegetable oil based inks;

• formulation of vegetable oil based inks that meet printability and deinkability requirements;

• validation of the deinking characteristics of selected vegetable oil based inks on a semi-industrial scale and the preparation and quality assessment of 'new' paper from the deinked pulp.

The successful outcome to the project will have wide ranging benefits beyond the printing/paper sector, as it will provide market opportunities for agricultural industry to develop a wider range of non-food crops as feedstocks for ink formulations and will prevent the possible development of inks which could be detrimental to the recycling process.
