Welcome to the fourth EPOBIO/BioMatNet ITEM update.
Around 30 new ITEMs or additions to existing material are now available on the BioMatNet website. The rate of addition of ITEMs added since the last issue of this newsletter has declined due to the lull between one RTD Framework Programme (FP6) and the next (FP7). Abstracts for most of the FP6 projects of relevance have already been added in previous reporting periods. However, we still lack further information for many of these. As the Commission re-organises from one Programme to the next, it becomes harder for us to obtain such information. Hence, if you were a coordinator of a a project in FP6 and would like to increase the exposure of your results we would be happy to receive submissions for addition to the BioMatNet website. The easiest thing for you to do would be to email us a copy of the 'Non-Confidential' summary from your latest periodic report or final report as appropriate. If you do this, please remember to include your contract details and the date of the report.
Much of the activity over the last few months has continued to be the updating and reorganising of the website. The main efforts have been further additions to the Database of Websites and the Publications section. The database now contains in excess of 1300 entries, while the listing of more than 200 publications and research reports available on this website has now been completed.
By the time this information is circulated, the closing date for the First Call for proposals for FP7 will have closed. We were not able to add a partner search facility to the website in time for this call, but expect to have this available for the Second Call. This will involve large Collaborative Projects and Networks of Excellence only with a two-step evaluation procedure. The deadline for Step 1 is the 11 September 2007.
As shown in the figure below the BioMatNet website continues to attract around 15,000 users each week.

For some 15 years a series of periodic CD-ROMs has been produced summarising the information available on the website. This series has been continued with the production of CD-7, which extends the information content to include EPOBIO. The CD-ROM now has 5 sections: The BioMatNet databse of EC funded projects and related activities; the BioMatNet database of websites; the EPOBIO website; copies of all EPOBIO reports; and links to other sources of information. This CD-ROM is available FREE OF CHARGE to any organisations and individuals in Europe working in the area of renewable bioproducts. To reserve a copy, tick the relevant box on the Registration Form.
For almost a decade BioMatNet has collaborated with the US-based Biobased Information System™ system that has provided a focused information system highlighting US developments on a daily basis through a link (Global News) on the BioMatNet website. In 2006, the BIS received additional investment of capital and expertise allowing for a more robust system, more information, and a host of new services and expanded content, that are being introduced throughout 2007. For those of you interested in what is happening in the USA this is the most comprehensive source for business-related information on biofuels, new crops, biobased products, and industrial biotechnology in the United States, providing an unparalleled resources for the entire Biobased economy.
We continue to receive requests to update information on the site or to add reports from various projects, as well as requests for specific information. Where possible such changes have been made and queries responded to. We are happy to encourage such a two-way exchange and to consider suggestions for additions, particularly in the News and Events sections, as well as information covering National Activities. As indicated above, the update of the 'Database of Websites' from information in BioMatNet ITEMs has been completed. If you would like your organisation added to this, let us know.
All information is welcome and will be considered for addition to BioMatNet on the basis of relevance - this site aims to inform on developments in the area, rather than serving as a trade directory. We prefer information to be submitted in a usable electronic format, by email to the address below.
