EPOBIO - ITEMS added to the BioMatNet Database

Number 5 - September 2007

Introduction

Welcome to the fifth EPOBIO/BioMatNet ITEM update.

Added ITEMs

Around 40 new ITEMs or additions to existing material have again been added to the BioMatNet site. The rate of addition of ITEMs since the last issue of this newsletter has continued to be relatively slow, again reflecting the lull between one RTD Framework Programme (FP6) and the next (FP7). Over the same period more information has been added to the EPOBIO site, as detailed in the EPOBIO Newsletter.

The additions include further information on FP7 and the partner search facility.

Abstracts for many of the FP6 projects of relevance have already been added in previous reporting periods. However, there were a number of projects funded towards the end of 2006 and in early 2007, which have been added.

We still lack further information for many of the the FP6 projects. As the Commission re-organises from one Programme to the next, it becomes harder for us to obtain such information. Hence, if you were a coordinator of a a project in FP6 and would like to increase the exposure of your results we would be happy to receive submissions for addition to the BioMatNet website. The easiest thing for you to do would be to email us a copy of the 'Non-Confidential' summary from your latest periodic report or final report as appropriate. If you do this, please remember to include your contract details and the date of the report.

Reorganisation of the website

The reorganising of the website has been completed. Further additions and updates have been made to both the Database of Websites and the Publications section. The database now contains in excess of 1300 entries, while the listing of more than 200 publications and research reports available on this website has been extended with the addition of the reports from the second phase of EPOBIO activity.

Partner Search

A Partner Search Request section was added to the BioMatNet website in July 2007. However, since Partner Search Requests are removed from the website when the Calls they relate to close and both the first and second calls for 2007 are now closed requests now relate to future activities. Hence, we have only retained a few general requests.

Future calls

In common with all themes of the “Cooperation” programme, work-programmes for the theme “Food, Agriculture and Fisheries, and Biotechnology” will be published annually. The call identifiers for the majority of the topics take the form: FP7-KBBE-year-number. The reference to the “KBBE” is to emphasise the objective of the theme to build the Knowledge-Based Bio-Economy. The “year” is the year of the work-programme and the“number” is the number of the call.

The second work-programme, in 2008, will contain the finalised topics for 2008 (FP7-KBBE-2008-2B one-stage evaluation), any ERA-net topics (FP7-ERANET-2008-RTD); and indicative topics for 2009. The third work-programme, in 2009, will contain the finalised topics for 2009 (FP7-KBBE- 2009-2A two-stage evaluation and FP7-KBBE-2009-2B one-stage evaluation), any ERA-net topics (FP7- ERANET-2009-RTD); and indicative topics for 2010. Although KBBE is the most relevant area of FP7 for funding of research on bioproducts and biofuels, possibilities of support may also be found in other sections of 'Cooperation' such as energy and environemnt. This section supports all types of research activities carried out by different research bodies in trans-national cooperation and aims to gain or consolidate leadership in key scientific and technology areas. Funding is also available in other parts of the programme, which include IDEAS covering basic and innovative research, the PEOPLE programme for training and developing scientisits and CAPACITIES that includes opportunities for development of SMEs (Small and Medium Enterprises). Further information on all these activities appear on the CORDIS website.

Use of the website

As shown in the following graph, the use of the BioMatNet site remains fairly constant attracting around 15,000 users each week, superimposed on which is a large peak which probably reflects the interest generated by the email notification covering the EPOBIO workshop and reports sent out in May and June.

BioMatNet CD-ROM 7

This CD-ROM was published in time for distribution at the EPOBIO workshop. Around 1000 copies have been distributed to date. It is still available FREE OF CHARGE to any organisations and individuals in Europe working in the area of renewable bioproducts. To obtain a copy, tick the relevant box on the Registration Form.

Biofuels Technology Platform Consultation

The Strategic research Agenda and Strategy Deployment Doccument will be published shortly and become available for consultation by Stakeholders and the general public.

VIEWLS Database

Many of those of you who are interested in biofuels may have used the VIEWLS database. This information should now be obtained through the FP6 Biofuel-Cities project.

Contribute to BioMatNet

We continue to receive requests to update information on the site or to add reports from various projects, as well as requests for specific information. Where possible such changes have been made and queries responded to. We are happy to encourage such a two-way exchange and to consider suggestions for additions, particularly in the News and Events sections, as well as information covering National Activities. As indicated above, the update of the 'Database of Websites' from information in BioMatNet ITEMs has been completed. We are now adding new links. If you would like your organisation added to this, let us know.

All information is welcome and will be considered for addition to BioMatNet on the basis of relevance - this site aims to inform on developments in the area, rather than serving as a trade directory. We prefer information to be submitted in a usable electronic format, by email to the address below.
